The Associazione Amici D’Italia gather every Tuesday morning at the Tyneside Irish Centre to play bingo. And now they will be gracing the silver screen after becoming the subject of a film by Newcastle University PhD student Simona Palladino.
The players are aged 60 and over and make bingo - known as tombola in Italy - bella, by speaking Italian and singing Italian songs. The stakes aren’t very high, just 10 pence a game, but it’s the social aspect that makes it special.
“My research looks at what it means to be an older migrant and what makes a place home,” says Simona, originally from Campobasso in central Italy. “And I found out about the bingo club after speaking to Italians living on Tyneside for my research. The first participant introduced me to her everyday life, and the community setting plays an important role for her. It’s a sort of hidden place, so if you’re not part of the community you would never know it was there.”
Tombola
The Associazione Amici D’Italia attracts bingo players from across Tyneside and further afield. Carlo Rea arrived in the North East when he was 11-years-old. Originally from the Lazio region of Italy, he is one of the organisers of Associazione Amici D’Italia. “We set the group up more than 20 years ago because it was becoming obvious that some of the first generation migrants were starting to become isolated,” says Carlo, from Ponteland.
“At first it was hard to get some of them along but eventually they did. Our meeting lasts for three hours. We spend an hour-and-a-half socialising and then we play bingo, or tombola as it’s called in Italy, for the rest of our session. We used to call the numbers out in Italian and English but as more and more English people started coming along - members were marrying them - we started just shouting the numbers out in English as it was taking too long to play the games.
“It’s good to keep in touch with other people with an Italian background. Simona’s like everyone’s adopted daughter, we’re always trying to marry her off! She’s been coming here and playing bingo with us for around three years now and she fitted in straight away.”

Surprisingly 60 has been largely ignored by bingo game developers. Whilst there's an abundance of 40 and 50 ball games, few have ventured into the 60 territory. In fact up until October 2020 only Tombola offered players the chance to play a game with 60 numbers. The popular independent games brand gave players the chance to play Bingo 60 and Blocks.
However the latest arrival into this section is something completely new - live bingo! Deal Or No Deal The Big Draw is a 60 ball game that's played with a presenter and it's a lot of fun. Why there isn't a wider range of 60 ball games we don't really know. Perhaps it's because it doesn't really lend itself to a theme (e.g. 52 ball = playing cards) or that it doesn't add anything new. That said the 60 ball bingo variations here are very innovative games so there's definitely scope to add to the roster below.
How To Play 60 Ball Bingo
In theory you play 60 ball bingo in exactly the same was as a 60 ball game. Numbers are called and the object is to coverall and shout house before other players. However that's not the case. All versions of the 60 ball game have their own quirks and features. Tombola's Blocks is completely different when it comes to online bingo as it doesn't have a standard bingo ticket. Deal Or No Deal Live is more traditional in some respects but you only need to cross off 7 numbers for a chance to win a prize.
Tombola are the only brand to currently have something vaguely resembling a 75 or 90 ball game. However in their Bingo 60 all players are given five coloured tickets. Each ticket (orange, green, red, purple and blue) has a different number of numbers (6, 9, 12, 15 and 18 respectively) and if you cross off those numbers first then you win the corresponding ticket colour prize. As the prizes are won the tickets drop out the game but you still have a chance to win with your other tickets.
